{"id":609,"date":"2018-05-27T04:20:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-27T02:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uncertain2degrees.wordpress.com\/?p=493"},"modified":"2018-08-20T08:11:54","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T08:11:54","slug":"role-play-3-green-politicians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uncertain2degrees.blogs.uni-hamburg.de\/?p=609","title":{"rendered":"Role play 3, Green Politicians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"p1596\"><\/span><span id=\"p1597\">To model the earth&#8217;s climate:<\/span><span id=\"p3714\"><span id=\"3723\" class=\"s-bl\"> What<\/span> does it tell us?<\/span><span id=\"p3715\"> Should we believe?<\/span><span id=\"p3716\"> Can we really rely on it? <\/span><span id=\"p3717\">Indeed, climate change <span id=\"3736\">remains<\/span> a \u201cwicked problem\u201d:<\/span><span id=\"p3718\"> a difficult knot in an uncomfortable area that present some extremely deep complexities, uncertainties and even disagreement on what the problem is.<\/span><span id=\"p3719\"> The Earth&#8217;s system is complex, and <span id=\"3729-3734\">modeling<\/span> it <span id=\"3725\">climate<\/span> can be a <span id=\"3733\">big<\/span> task coupled with many uncertainties. <\/span><span id=\"p3720\"><span id=\"3726\">Climate<\/span> scientists <span id=\"3735\">try<\/span> their best, taking into account many variables.<\/span><span id=\"p3721\"> However, given the inherent uncertainties of <span id=\"3727\">climate<\/span> <span id=\"3730\">models<\/span>, <span id=\"3724\" class=\"s-rg\">should<\/span> <span id=\"3728\">climate<\/span> <span id=\"3737\">mitigation<\/span> and adaptation policy rely on these <span id=\"3731\">models<\/span>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p2303\">This was the question for our third role play at <span id=\"2311\" class=\"s-rg\">ICSS<\/span>, uni-Hamburg and the discussion occurred within the communities of mainstream <span id=\"2324\">scientists<\/span>, skeptical <span id=\"2325\">scientists<\/span>, Green and <span id=\"2312\" class=\"s-rg\">ODP<\/span> <span id=\"p2302\">(<span id=\"2309\" class=\"s-rg\">\u00d6kologisch-Demokratische<\/span> <span id=\"2310\" class=\"s-rg\">Partei<\/span>)<\/span> politicians.<\/span><span id=\"p3275\"><span id=\"3296\" class=\"s-bl\"> Mainstream<\/span> scientists opened up the discussion with confidence in the use of <span id=\"3299\">model<\/span> results.<\/span><span id=\"p3276\"> They argued that while there are some sources of uncertainties in climate <span id=\"3300\">models<\/span>, <span id=\"3301\">models<\/span> are based on well established physical laws and produce logical representation of the future.<\/span><span id=\"p3277\"> In addition, <span id=\"3302\">models<\/span> have worked in the <span id=\"3312\">past<\/span>, and success in the future can be judged when looked into the <span id=\"3313\">past<\/span>.<\/span><span id=\"p4271\"><span id=\"4313\">Moreover<\/span>, evidence and data of various <span id=\"3303\">models<\/span> show that they are adequate enough to rely on.<\/span><span id=\"p4272\"> Preferably, it is <span id=\"4304\">better<\/span> to rely on experts knowledge and start <span id=\"4314\">mitigation<\/span> now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"p4273\">Skeptical scientists agreed on the necessity of <span id=\"4315\">mitigation<\/span> and adaptation policies but however questioned the adequacy of climate models for that purpose.<\/span><span id=\"p4274\">They argued that while it is morally questionable to assign economic value to a loss homeland, climate models are still so uncertain about the cost benefits analysis and everything is based on assumptions.<\/span><span id=\"p4275\"> On the basis of assumptions, is it possible to weigh losses of <span id=\"4305\">future<\/span> generations against today&#8217;s cost? <\/span><span id=\"p4276\">Comment on emission pathways, discount rate, technological changes and so on?<\/span><span id=\"p4277\"> What&#8217;s more, how <span id=\"4306\">do<\/span> we economically quantify environmental degradation?<\/span><span id=\"p4514\"><span id=\"4524\" class=\"s-bl\"> More<\/span> so, climate models are based on physical laws which are hardly noteworthy.<\/span><span id=\"p4515\"> <span id=\"4540\">Rather<\/span>, the question should be if we are willing to make fit to a <span id=\"4530\">book<\/span> which does <span id=\"4538\">not<\/span> <span id=\"4539\">quite<\/span> understand the <span id=\"4531\">book<\/span> itself?<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p4516\">Although, <span id=\"4525\">ODP<\/span> politicians did not <span id=\"4532\">argue<\/span> about the functionality of models, <span id=\"4534\">they<\/span> <span id=\"4533\">argued<\/span> what was important <span id=\"4541\">was<\/span> the society.<\/span><span id=\"p4517\"><span id=\"4535\">They<\/span> stressed that many policy actions should be aimed to improve the health and well being of the people.<\/span><span id=\"p4518\"> <span id=\"4536\">They<\/span> also <span id=\"4542\">noted<\/span> that, while the timescale of <span id=\"4527\">model<\/span> projections are long, the ruling time of political parties are short.<\/span><span id=\"p4519\"> Therefore, priority should be given to improve the socio-economic and welling being of the German people regardless of <span id=\"4528\">model<\/span> projections.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p4639\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"p4640\">Green politicians argued that, rather than trust in their gusts, <span id=\"4647\">they<\/span> would rely on models for guidance to work on strategies for <span id=\"4661\">mitigation<\/span> and adaptation policies.<\/span><span id=\"p4641\"><span id=\"4648\">They<\/span> claimed while basic <span id=\"4646\" class=\"s-rg\">scientific<\/span> uncertainty and natural variability will prevent scientists from providing accurate and certain projections.<\/span><span id=\"p4642\"> Models provide alternative policy choices, and further information upon which <span id=\"4649\">they<\/span> can base their judgements on.<\/span><span id=\"p4643\"> Preferably, it will be <span id=\"4657\">best<\/span> to introduce climate uncertainty in their <span id=\"4656\">everyday<\/span> operations.<\/span><span id=\"p4644\"> In most cases, <span id=\"4650\">they<\/span> know how to do so, since uncertainty is at the heart of many economic decisions <span id=\"4651\">they<\/span> take.<\/span><span id=\"p4645\"> <span id=\"4652\">They<\/span> proposed that to make the precautionary principle work, it is urgent to include <span id=\"4653\">future<\/span> climate conditions than wait for <span id=\"4654-4658\">future<\/span> generations to find out whether these models were right or not and <span id=\"4660\">leave<\/span> them with the difficult task of <span id=\"4659\">dealing with<\/span> a savage situation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To model the earth&#8217;s climate: What does it tell us?
