General info and Course Structure 2022

How will we teach ‘Uncertain Climate Futures’?

The course is taught every week on Thursday (10:15 to 11:45) in room 241 (second floor) in the Geomatikum. Due to the ongoing pandemic, we will need to keep distance, where possible and use FFP2 masks during class.

Between the 4 April and the 14 July, we have in total 14 lectures. In each of the lectures, you students will actively participate either in form of open discussions or role-plays. In almost all lectures you will get homework to prepare, mostly in groups.

Together with us, 7 lecturers from different disciplines, we will discuss uncertain climate futures. Our main goal is to improve our joint understanding of the different perspectives on uncertainty and the resulting diversity of responses to it.

The course will be structured as follows:

Lecture 1-2 [Introduction]: Input on the course concept, the blog and introduction to uncertainty plus some interactive discussions.

Lecture 3- 10 [Perspectives and Participation]: Lecturers will provide input on different perspectives of uncertainty (for more details go to Sessions Plan). Starting from the third lecture, you will use the input of the preceding lecture to prepare yourselves for role-plays (see Role-plays and figure 1), which will take place at the beginning of five lectures till the 10th lecture. In between we will have a session, where we start organising the panel discussion planed for the end of the class. Different from last year, you are going to get the possibility to actively shape the roles and role-play question for two role-plays. We will give you further details during the semester.

Lecture 11-14 [Preparation, Conclusions and Feedback]: In the last sessions, we plan a feedback sessions on ideas of your essays, a preparation session for the panel discussion, the panel discussion in the second last lecture and a feedback and a summary lecture during our last meeting. We will provide you with further information on that during the semester.

The course structure is still up for changes. If you have questions or ideas, which are not answered nor covered in the Session Plan, Role-plays or Rules and Procedures, please contact the course coordination.
